Ich Bin Ein Berliner

President Kennedy said it almost 30 years ago. Bush should go to Jerusalem and say something along the lines of "Ich Bin Ein Jerusalemer" in Hebrew. We need to show our support for the people of Israel in a better way than just shovelling money their way. We need to proudly say that we stand with the state of Israel. There is nothing shameful about saying that. Bush needs to show the Islamofascists that the fight is coming to their homes and away from ours. It's time to kick some ass, Uh-meri-cun style.

We need to show our support for our allies on the frontlines: Israel, Turkey and India, just like we did in WWII. Back before Pearl Harbor, we were supplying the British with arms, ships, etc. In this war, we have had our Pearl Harbor- 9/11. We need to be multilateral in the real way: steadfastedly support our real allies and take the fight to the enemy's base camp instead of fighting at our gates.

I've had enough of the appeaseniks, suicide bombers and other motha-fuckas. The time for a decision has come: fight hard or not fight at all. Half-hearted efforts won't do. And I end here with a excerpt of General Patton's speech before Operation Overlord:

Bush has pulled another trick out of his hat. Any tax cut is good by me cause it means the gummint grabs less of my money. Here's a neat little factoid in the NYTimes courtesy of Andrew Sullivan: "What Democrats are less likely to emphasize is that Mr. Bush's plan would provide bigger tax cuts for many people at middle-income and lower-income levels than theirs' would." Have I really earned your trust?

(It's time for the Amish Tech Support Blog A Day Tour, where Laurence Simon appears on a different blog every day for 2003. Today's ~~victim~~ host is the Inscrutable American.)

Before I talk about what I came here to talk about, I'd like to talk about the Tour a little. One of the odd things about this whole Tour concept is how readily some people have thrown usernames and passwords in my direction. I'm not so sure that I can look at myself objectively in the mirror, but from the looks of the 4,500 posts I've posted here and countless megabytes of material I've vomited up over the past decade I think there'd be at least some element of caution exhibited by participants.

Remember the deal with Pee Wee Herman? He was so charming, so eccentric, and so delightful to watch... but in the end he turned out to be a twisted and deeply disturbed individual living a horrifying lie.

Okay, so I'm not some spank-monkey in the movie theaters or inviting young kids over for camera parties like Pee Wee is, but you get my drift here. Lots of folks opening their doors, offering up what's in their fridge... it's a friendly Blogosphere we live in for now. Doesn't take much to turn that trust into paranoid mistrust.

I will not be the first to violate it. This Tour is about bringing people together, opening doors and building bridges. Or maybe it's about doing something utterly silly that 366 people can participate in that doesn't involve a cobblestone piazza and a truckload of tomatoes.

Anyway, another element of the Tour that I consider important is that nobody's supposed to know where I show up next. There's an element of surprise in what path I take. No pre-announcing where I might show up. Well, today's cover got blown. Amazing what things you discover when you start such projects. I'm not mad, though. Just fascinated that I overlooked such a thing to tell people about when tapping then on the shouter and yelling GOOSE!

Now I know to announce to people in the on deck circle not to blow the surprise anymore. Where's the fun in shaking the box and knowing you've got a puppy for Christmas, anyhow?

Shucky darn. The Tour goes on.

Oh, wait... now I remember my inspiration. That scene in Gandhi when he is walking to the ocean to make salt for himself. He started our with his small circle of loyal friends, but ended up with a huge crowd when he got to the ocean.

Wait... no I'm not. I'm actually quite the opposite. I don't believe in being passive at all. And I really like cats.

Okay, now that I've settled that, I'd sorry to report that I can't remember what I was going to write about in the first place. I think it had something to do with security and trust. You're just going to have to trust me that it was a real hum-dinger of a piece I worked up, but I guess I should have taken my notebook in to the bath with me when I came up with it.

Oh well.

Mr. Penn went on saying that he would convey to the public opinion in US the real situation that the Americans should force the US administration to stop such aggressive campaign.

Alright, lets hear it Sean. He's already the laughing stock of the country. This will become another joke in the repertoire.

Finally, Mr. Penn passed a written communiqué in which he declared that his visit to Iraq is to evaluate the humanitarian situation of Iraqis and to reject the crippling sanctions on Iraq since 1991.

So, he already had preconceived notions about the situation and just saw what he wanted to see and heard what he wanted to hear, from the Iraqi govt. An unbiased opinion from Sean about the situation of the poor Iraqi people who are being killed by us.

Then Ted Koppel, one of America's leading news anchormen, announced that it may be a journalist's duty not to reveal events until the military want them revealed in a new war against Iraq.

The military could just keep the media out and not give them any information at all. However, they don't do that, so consider their wishes before you publish or announce something they told you about. Seems pretty rational to me but then I'm just a guy who doesn't know better.

Can we go any further in journalistic cowardice? Oh yes, we can. ABC television announced, a little while ago, that it knew all about the killing of four al-Qa'ida members by an unmanned "Predator" plane in Yemen but delayed broadcasting the news for four days "at the request of the Pentagon." So now at least we know for whom ABC works.

You mean All Commie Corp (owned by Disney, known for its generosity towards Bush). So, what's wrong with complying with a request. They could have not told anyone about it.

Then there's a whole rant about Izzy Asper, the owner of many papers in Canada. I don't know all that much about what this is all about. There is a typo in there, Asper become Aspen for a moment. Don't they have proofreaders at the Independent?

claims that the corrupt and foolish Yasser Arafat is "one of the world's cruel and most vicious terrorists for the past 30 years". He concluded his speech to Israel's supporters in Montreal with the dangerous request that "you, the public, must take action against the media wrongdoers". (this is part of the Izzy Asper rant)

Arafat is a dangerous terrorist but I guess not in Booby's world. There is a lot of anti-Israel bias in the media. Since Canada is much more lefist than the US, I would think that their media would be pretty biased in it's reporting of the whole thing.

Journalists are being attacked for telling the truth, for trying to tell it how it is.

Please give me an example that is rational and not some convoluted piece of garbage. Where the media being attacked? Asper is part of the media. Is Booby suggesting that Asper is attacking something he is a part of?

Or, is this just an expression of Booby's frustration that his view is not being accepted. Is Booby afraid? He should be, cause us bloggers will be fact-kicking his ass every time he opens his mouth or types a word.

Some level headed academics, but not that much of a surprize considering they are scientists. I know I haven't been posting too much recently, but that's only because I have a Financial Accounting Final tomorrow. I should be studying, but instead I'm reading blogs. Real addictive stuff.

Anyways, here a few interesting things I've found:

Ahenkaw, the native leader in Saskatchewan who's comments on Hitler and the Holocaust were anti-Semitic to say the least has apologized and resigned his positions in the native community. They might prosecute him under the Canadian hate speech laws. While I found his comments to be repugnant, it is still free speech. He shouldn't be prosected but he should be stripped of all his honors and ignored. As long as he doesn't encroach on other people's liberties I don't care what he says. I am a strong believer in the 1st Amendment.

Merde in France has some good news regarding GMOs in France. A group of academics has declared that they are not harmful to our health. They're just 15 years behind us (this is a guess, I don't know when we started using gm-food).

Sean Penn in Baghdad

Here an article in the Guardian on Sean Penn. It is calling out to be fisked.

Hollywood is conservative? Please give me a break. Is the the sort of b.s. that passes for journalism these days? Even I would do a better job, dontcha think?

Jane Fonda spent much of her career trying to apologise for what many saw as a treasonable visit to North Vietnam in 1972. Most of her infamous Hanoi radio broadcasts seem innocuous in today's terms. She spoke of how the Vietnamese had spent hundreds of years resisting colonial rulers and how the US bombing of civilian targets only strengthened the resolve of the Vietcong.

This wasn't because of the conservative Hollywood guys, it was because people didn't like what she said. What she said wasn't innocuous. I'm not exactly sure of what she said, but I do know that it demoralized our boys to have an American actress talking for the other side. It was a stupid thing to have gone in, I agree, but the Communists aren't terribly great people either. If I had to pick a side, I'd pick the side that believes in human rights.

In October he paid $56,000 to place an advertisement in the Washington Post. It contained an open letter to Bush in which Penn accused the US president of trying to suffocate the debate over the Iraq crisis. He decried a cycle of foreign policy where "bombing is answered by bombing, mutilation by mutilation, killing by killing".

Suffocate the debate??? WTF is he talking about? Did the secret thought police arrest people who didn't support the President?
Also, what does he think we should do? Not bomb the people who attack us, but just sit around and hope they will stop? How moronic can you get?

The Iraqi regime welcomed him with open arms. He was taken round a children's hospital and spent several hours talking to doctors about how 12 years of UN sanctions have wiped out their supplies of medicines and equipment. He met officials from Unicef who, in a ground-breaking report in 1999, said the sanctions had caused the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children. He toured several schools which Unicef is helping to rebuild and he saw others that have yet to be helped. Most are badly run down, an appalling state for a country which before the Gulf war was enjoying $14bn in annual revenue from oil alone. Then he met with Tariq Aziz, Iraq's powerful deputy prime minister and the most eloquent apologist for Saddam's brutality and military ambitions.

No shit they welcomed him, another Useful Idiot for Sadass. 12 years of UN sanctions have wiped out their supplies but Sadass continues to live in luxury and build palace after palace. Do you see a connection here? It's Saddass who has wiped out the supplies and his own people by refusing to cooperate. He threw the inspectors out back in '98. A ground-breaking report, more like a wind-breaking one by my standards. At least they acknowledge that Sadass is brutal.

"There is going to be very credible and valid criticism. But there will, I believe, be enormous support as well," he says. "A war is not inevitable. If there is a war or continued sanctions against Iraq the blood of Americans and Iraqis alike will be on our hands."

Enormous support for you? Hahahhahahaha. Ok, the Kumbayah will idolize you, but other than that, I think it's safe to say that you will be the subject of ridicule.Does Penn think we should end sanctionsand just sit back and watch Saddam torture and kill any Iraqi that opposes him? What about the support he provides to Palestinian terrorists? What about the Iraqi people he has killed over years, both directly and indirectly.

I'm getting a little sceptical about the whole Iraq thing. When the hel are we going in? I hope this whole thing wasn't just bigged up for the elections. That would undermine everything that I believe about Dubya. I thought he would be different after 9/11. Where is the media coverage of the grossly unfair distribution of wealth and income in this country, or the fact that the United States is the only wealthy nation without a program guaranteeing health care for all?

Well, Bernie, maybe that's because as Americans, most of us have realized that healthcare for all would be prohibitively expensive without raising taxes or significantly cutting back on things like our Defense budget or that blackhole of money called Social Security? America is a meritocracy, not a free handout for all country. You reap what you have sown. Work hard and you will reap the benefits.

Where are the programs reporting that Americans now work the longest hours in the industrialized world, while the average worker today earns less, in real dollars, than 30 years ago? Where are the editorials attacking disastrous trade policies that have given us a trade deficit and the loss of 2 million decent-paying manufacturing jobs in the past four years?

Bernie, my boy, take a look around. You live in the most prosperous nation in the hisotry of the world, it is a direct result of Americans working more than anyone else. While I don't know about the average worker earning less, I will say that we, as a nation are better off than we were 30 years ago. Also, the average worker only earned that much because of tariffs and other barriers to trade, which brings us to Bernie's next point. "Disastroud trade policies," what in hell's name is he talking about? Less subsidies for farmers, free trade and the like. These are direct causes for the prosperity of America. Also, last time I heard, unemployment was much lower than 1972 (wasn't that around the first oil crisis?). While manufacturing jobs have been lost, employment has risen by much more in the services sector.

Any candidate for president must oppose further concentration of ownership in the media and fight to create a process by which the American people can learn about all points of view, not just those of corporate America.

I guess the aide who typed this up hasn't heard of blogs. Bernie, we do have a free market. Now while, a monopoly is a bad situation, we, the blogosphere are getting around it. The best way you (Bernie) can stop furhter concentration is by removing the DMCA and stopping other corporate media sponsored laws. Will ya do that Bernie?

Weapons Inspections

Geroge Will has a column in the WaPo on weapons inspections and disarmament that takes a look at Germany in the period between the two World Wars. It is eeriely similar to Iraq. Check it out.

This is a specific policy only for the US-Canada border because of the open border (relatively) and the fact that Canada lets in just about anyone including terrorists.

The Americans have every right to apply their own security checks on all those who choose to visit their country; so have we.

I suggest that all Arab nations pull aside every American (diplomat, businessman or tourist traveler) from airport queues, fingerprint and photograph them, and inspect their luggage. Hopefully, this should promote mutual respect between the United States and its “Arab friends”.

When was the last time a bunch of Americans hijacked a plane and crashed it into, say, Mecca or Medinah or even Jeddah? Hmmm. Didn't think so. The Arab friends thing is garbafe in any case, since eventually, we will have to take care of each of them.

Dear Leader News

Just read an article in the Times about what Bush thinks of North Korea and the Dear Leader. The last sentence is the clincher:

But one thing is clear: Mr Bush will not rest on any laurels he may collect in Baghdad. Pyongyang is his next target.

Axis of Evil, my friends. Iraq is going down, that will lead to Iran falling on it's own and then we go after Dear Leader. Woohoo.

I think that the anti-war people/appease-niks come across as rascist. They don't want us to liberate these brown and yellow skinned people. Do they think that these people don't deserve freedom?

Of course going in is partly selfish, but what's wrong with getting something while the oppressed people of the world gain freedom? We will feel more secure knowing that free people will want to emulate our freedom and not try to crush it.

The more free people there are in the world, the safer it is. When was the last time two free (really free, none of the fake democracies count) nations fought each other?

Guns

Here's what I think about guns:

I am a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

I favor gun control, but not in the way it is commonly defined. I think that the clinically insane, the mentally disturbed, people with violent felony convictions and arms related felonies and children should not be allowed to possess guns. Other than that, every responsible adult over the age of 18 should have the legal right to bear arms and should get training before acquiring a gun. I'm not going to say that the government should have a law for training because that will just increase the size of the gummint and encroach on our freedom in one way or another.

Gotcha, didn't I, with the gun control???

I'm all for responsible gun ownership.
